Inflation: A retrospective

A look back at the conditions that defined the 1970s

With articles in the Financial Times today stating “Unpublished ECB inflation estimates raise prospect of earlier rate rise” and “Is it time for the Bank of England to start tightening monetary policy” it seems like a perfect time to have a look at inflation
.
No actual forecasts here, though you can form your own opinion, of course; just a look back at the 70s and the conditions that existed then and later.

Let’s start with a chart. This one is for the UK, but the US one is not substantially different. And of course we note that once again we are on the right track- the chart is for 16th September the date I started this post.

As the chart shows and as we already know inflation was at its peak in the 1970s. But what specific astrological conditions characterised that period?

It is clear to me that on the basis that they are expansive, we should look at Neptune and Jupiter our bubble creators extraordinaire. Yet Neptune and Jupiter meet every 13 years, so clearly that alone is insufficient to explain a once in 50 year event. Is there something else?

Indeed there is. In the 1970s Neptune was trundling its merry way through Sagittarius, and signs don’t come much more expansive than that one, which is in fact one of the 2 signs ruled by Jupiter.

Here is the chart for the Jupiter Neptune conjunction in 1971 in the UK.  The conjunction, here forming the base of the chart was also in the UK second house of money and resources. Definitely a set up that you wouldn’t want. It was also trine the UK Jupiter giving it a bit of extra ( but rather un-needed oomph) and a sextile to the UK Uranus indicating the expansion would probably be unexpected.

Inflation in the Uk actually peaked in summer 1975 as Neptune transited the progressed Moon. Jupiter was trine the UK Saturn at 23 degrees weakening the significator of stable situations.

A second lesser peak occurred in May 1980 a year after the 1979 general election. By then Neptune was trine the UK Saturn and the progressed Moon had moved into square with natal Neptune and quincunx the natal Moon.

Neptune continued in Sagittarius throughout the 1970s, and early 1980s inflationary period, until 1984/5 when it moved into Capricorn. The next conjunction with Jupiter was in January 1984 and is also interesting as it is at 0 degrees 1 min of Capricorn, so out of Sagittarius but only by a whisker. The situation improved significantly after the early 1980s, though full stability did not occur until the 1990s.

This of course begs the question, do we have to wait until 2137 and the next Jupiter Neptune conjunction in Sagittarius for another bout of high inflation?

The answer is of course probably not. Neptune in hard aspect to the UK Saturn and Neptune in 2007 might not have brought inflation but did bring a banking crisis.

Neptune in Jupiter’s other sign of Pisces ( and in modern astrology associated with Neptune itself) from 2011 has led to asset price inflation. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on your perspective,  the Neptune Jupiter conjunction of 2010 was in Aquarius so we escaped the possibility that we would start Pisces in the way we started Sagittarius. However Neptune moves too slowly for us to escape completely- there is a Jupiter Neptune conjunction in 2022 at, oh no (!) 23 degrees Pisces. Here is the chart.

Just on the basis of this short post, I can’t guarantee you retail inflation, but I can guarantee the seeds of some related financial drama. I’ve already indicated elsewhere that next spring it is an interesting time in the US so we are looking at a theme.

Enjoy.
